The program tests an estimated 2.3 million vehicles a year. Drive Clean facilities will continue to receive the same portion of test fees as they previously collected — $24.50 for each emissions pass certificate, $30 or $17.50 for a failed test and $12 for each of the first two retests.

Vehicles registered with antique plates and vehicles more than 25 years old with regular passenger plates must pass safety, but not emissions, tests. Motorcycles and vehicles older than 1975 are exempt from testing. Vehicles 25 years and older are exempt from testing.

Is a motorcycle. Has been owned for a year or more and was driven less than 5,000 miles the year prior to the emissions testing inspection. Is a new vehicle with less than 5,000 miles. Is a registered antique vehicle, or classic collectible vehicle.

For registration in 2018, this includes all 2016 and newer model year vehicles. Additionally, vehicles that are 25 model years or older are exempt from emissions testing. Your vehicle must be tested every year prior to its registration date (the vehicle owner's birthday). For registration in 2018, the three most recent model years are exempt from emissions testing, which includes 2016 or newer model year vehicles. Vehicles 25 model years old or older are exempt.

1982 and newer vehicles require an enhanced emissions test every two years at a cost of $25. 1981 and older vehicles require a two-speed idle test every year at a cost of $15.00. Vehicle Identification Number ( VIN) verifications are also available at a cost of $20.00.

An emissions test itself does not take long. It usually runs between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on your vehicle.
